The Abby’s Pokemon Aquarium website details a guide to “finding in FireRed LeafGreen”. This guide tells you to restart your save file and start a new game with GameShark codes active. And that you can tell if you did this right if there is a new rock by the water in Pallet Town. The GameShark codes do not exist, but if you just patch the ROM, a new rock will appear (meaning you did it correctly). Continue following the instructions on the website if you want to have a more interesting playthrough (which contains the meat of this hack), or don’t follow it if you want the sweet QOL as promised.

The website tells you to, when you start your new game, name your rival BLUE (all caps worked for me, no guarantees on anything else), only play the game with your starter (which has to be Squirtle), beat Brock with Wartortle, then go to Mount Moon doing only required trainers (it worked for me if you accidentally did extra ones, but take that with a grain of salt), and then once you exit Mount Moon immediately go back and get the Lucky Egg (it’s where the Super Nerd was). After this go back and defeat every trainer with the Lucky Egg equipped, including Misty, then go to Bill’s house with a fully evolved Blastoise, and walk into Bill’s garden. Doing all these steps does NOT lock you onto a specific route just yet, but it is required for the most interesting route (which I’ll cover in this guide as I haven’t done any other routes yet). Also note that you can just play the game as normal and nothing really weird happens. And you get all the interesting QOL features promised! Great.

Get the Soul Badge from Bill’s Garden (notably allowing you to surf), and Blastoise should now be able to surf around! Head to Cerulean Cave early (save before doing this, as it’s fairly hard to get through this under leveled) until you get to where Mewtwo is. There will be an item there instead. Get this and head to the S.S. Anne. This will get you the Mist Stone. You can use it on your starter Pokemon to evolve it. You can get up to this point even without being locked in to the final route and progress through the game with a cool 4th stage starter Pokemon! To continue on the route, defeat Blue with the new move your Pokemon learns during this battle.

After doing the above part, keep going along the game. Defeat the Snorlax blocking the path to Fuschia City. Go to the Safari Zone and get the Gold Teeth and the HM for Surf (you’ll need this to make your starter relearn it). Trade in the Gold Teeth for the HM for Strength. Teach your starter both of these moves. Get one Water Stone from the Seafoam Islands. Then, defeat Koga. This is highly recommended, and you only would want to skip it if you want to do a sequence break later down the road.

Head into the Safari Zone, try to leave early, say NO, and then go back in and press RETIRE (in the menu). Then head through the Seafoam Islands. Get rid of every item in your main pocket AND BALLS POCKET (you can keep your TMs and key items) and then stand two steps to the right of the sign. Then on Route 19, press the 6 rocks in this order: top-right, top-middle, middle, right, bottom, bottom-left. Save and restart the game once this happens. Then a puzzle will happen.

Go to Celadon City and defeat Erika there. She will not be there when you first arrive, check the Pokemon center in Saffron City to get her back to her gym. Battle her and get the badge. Keep following the instructions, defeating Blaine and the 6 trainers as requested. Get the Secret Key and interact with that spot on the shoreline. Press A to turn your Secret Key into a different key. Go to the Rocket Hideout in Celadon City and go to the elevator. Don’t get the elevator key though. Use the new key you go to go to B3F and defeat Giovanni. Defeat Giovanni and this is where the official guide ends.

Go to Lavender Tower. Continue up it until you get to Blue. You most likely cannot defeat the Pokemon, so run. Use the ticket you just got to go to Six Island. Please note that the Odd Ticket is a one way ticket, so make sure you do all you can there. Get the Sapphire on Six Island and go to the cave. Progress through and go off the right of the island, then go up. In the dark area, do the rock puzzles. Make sure you save after each one as I got softlocked on the third. Finish the final puzzle (FRLGDIPS is your hint) and fight Professor Oak. Back in the garden you will get the HM for Dive. Head back to the rock and get your final stone and final evolution (we’re up to 6 stages). Head to the basement of the Seafoam Islands. Then dive. You will have to fight a battle against a familiar foe. Continue through the abyss. At the final puzzle use the same solution, with a hint of FRLGDIPS. Continue and the game is essentially a cutscene at this point. Enjoy.
