neon bounce arcade release devlog

Neon Bounce Arcade has been released on itch.io and Newgrounds! This was one of the most fun games I’ve made, and honestly I really enjoyed making it too. Most of the development was playtesting - that’s how you can tell that a game is good. Anyways, let’s talk about the development.

I got the idea to make a new mobile game after a sudden realization one day that in just over 3 months, Family Comics Studios (and by extension, me) will be able to publish games on the Play Store. And my first thought for a new game was to make a new version of Neon Bounce. I started working on Neon Bounce in 2024, back when it was mostly “solid black background and green color scheme”. Holy cow was the game ugly then, I really can’t believe it looked like that for most of its time released. And I made the basic part of the game, but I also made a bunch of stuff for “pay to win/commerical” parts of the game, like two currencies, Neon and Radon if I remember correctly, and you got Neon from playing the game and Radon would have been the paid currency. There were also skins for the player, and also a bunch of random music tracks you could buy. I reuploaded this version of Neon Bounce here.

I remember I submitted the game to CrazyGames, but it got rejected. This could have been for many reasons, such as the game being bad, but I remember thinking that this was because it had loading times of 2+ minutes. So around a year after the original release, I cut out pretty much everything in the game except for the base gameplay. And this was the main version of Neon Bounce for a while, until I innovated, and I made the best addition I’d ever made to the series…

Megastreaks. Bonuses you get for hitting high streaks. This was one hundred percent the tipping point for me really enjoying Neon Bounce as a game. I added these in a free update, and then I really enjoyed the game from then. Because megastreaks were a great update. Anyways, a little after this, I added the big visual update, and that’s where the game stayed from this point.

Back to Neon Bounce Arcade. When I was on a walk with my dad I brainstormed some ideas for the sequel. My main ideas were to make a wave system where you would defeat a wave of enemies, the screen would scroll, and another wave would spawn. This did not work well, so I just decided to make waves spawn instantly and for the screen to not scroll. Some of the more notable changes I made is removing difficulties, and adding gamemodes in their place. And you get more damage the higher wave you are/higher score you have. Which is very nice. And now we have Neon Bounce Arcade. Another change that was made is that The Prototype is supposed to be used when you’re in game and The Disturbance only in menu, but Dimrain47 isn’t responding, so The Prototype is disabled for now. (If you’re reading this, Dimrain47, check your Newgrounds messages more often!)

So now the game’s released. And it’ll probably be updated with more Newgrounds integration and more Megastreaks and gamemodes, as well as being released on the Play Store whenever possible. Alright, that’s it. Have a good one
